Senior Caregiving & Harmony Starts At Home
Sherry & Gavin, a husband and wife team, have shared several experiences over the last three years that have led them down the path to discovering their life’s true purpose, which is Harmony Caregiving.
Sometimes the unexpected happens; from a death of a parent to a cancer diagnosis of your only parent to a cancer diagnosis of your spouse.
The couple knows from personal experience that it is very difficult to deal with these family challenges when they come up. These personal experiences prompted the idea of the Harmony Family of CareGivers, the concept of providing helping hands and support to other families whenever and wherever they are needed.
Three years ago Gavin’s father passed away suddenly leaving the family and his Mother wondering how she would manage the family home on her own and who would be around daily to make sure she was doing okay? The discussion was had and the decision for the couple to move in to help out with these things was made. The couple moved out of their home and into the family home with Gavin’s Mother.
They soon realized how many little and big things needed to be arranged and taken care of on a day to day basis (these being the things Gavin’s Dad had taken care of for over forty years).
Gavin had to figure out how to manage an estate, house, a grieving Mother all while dealing with the grieving process himself. He quickly realized that these many things such as; managing mail, cancelling credit cards, filing taxes of his deceased father: taking care of home maintenance things like lawn care, snow removal, house cleaning, meal preparation and errand running need to be organized so that his Mother will not need to worry about them moving forward.
These tasks, on top of working full-time and completing his Masters in Business Administration at the University of Alberta ended up being too much. Adding fuel to the fire, one year after this move-in, another life-challenging situation came to the forefront when Gavin’s Mother was diagnosed with cancer, underwent surgery and recovery. She is now healthy, and happy in her own home.
Soon after his Mothers recovery, Sherry and Gavin were forced to face the reality of Sherry’s own cancer diagnosis and spent the next year having surgery, treatment and visiting multiple doctors. Gavin was working full-time, and eventually, the load of having had to take care of both his Wife and his Mother became far too exhausting.
The Start to Our Wholehearted Senior Care Services
The couple believes, all things happened to them for a reason, and for them it was through these life challenges, that they were inspired to start a companionship support at home service. One that treats the person as a whole being not just their diagnosis. They realized that having multiple sets of hands to help would actually ease the stress of the situation.
The couple had always had a personal mission to “make a difference” in the world.
Sherry grew up with the majority of her family working in nursing homes and had personally spent some time working with a client who lived with Dementia. Gavin’s parents having owned a drug store in Strathcona: the couple realized they have had the wonderful, rewarding opportunity to have served in this way and felt they were being guided to provide some support to clients and their families.
Based on the modalities that Sherry used to heal her cancer, the couple came up with the concept of offering wholehearted holistic care that creates balance in body, mind & spirit.
The Harmony Care Team help their clients enjoy every moment of their life.
Harmony Caregiving believes in the concept of providing whole person, wholehearted and holistic caregiving services to encourage full life living.
